Roy Scranton has written all this himself. Where he’s been, why he went, what happened to him from his Oregon boyhood to Moab to Baghdad, who he’s become. He has recounted in New York Times essays his journey from aimless college dropout to Army sergeant to Roy Scranton completed a B.A. at the New School and an M.A. at the New School for Social Research before joining the Princeton English department in 2010. His dissertation, The Trauma Hero and the Lost War: World War II, American Literature, and the Politics of Trauma, 1945-1975, investigates the politics of trauma in World War II literature and explores the hero as metaphor Roy Scranton is based in Los Angeles. He recently released two books and has a few other small pieces coming out in various publications in the near future. He is now starting to think about what a human future may look like in the catastrophic world that is currently emerging and beginning to figure out how his work will take shape moving forward. I first met Roy Scranton when he was at The New School.
